Press Release For immediate release: 27 September 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local teacher’s pink pedal power to help beat breast cancer Local cyclist Ranjit Allen from Loughborough in Leicestershire will gear up to beat breast cancer this October by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s women’s cycling event, Pedal it Pink. The primary school teacher at Woodstock Primary, Leicester and Mountfields Lodge, Loughborough will join hundreds of women at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham for the city’s second annual event on Sunday 17 October after having two breast cancer scares. Ranjit said: “I had one scare which turned out to be a result of exercising with too many weights and than I had another scare after having a baby which turned out to be a build up of fatty tissue. I was very scared, especially the second time as I could feel a lump, so I was relieved when the doctors told me it wasn’t breast cancer. I now know what it’s like to be facing something so frightening and thinking about never seeing your children grow up is beyond words. I now want to help women who have this disease so I hope lots of people will sponsor me for Pedal it Pink and help the charity continue their mission to find a cure.” Ranjit is taking on the full marathon so if you would like to sponsor please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org/donations and donate what you can, Pedal it Pink, sponsored by Santander, has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the 5k Family Lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Ranjit at Pedal it Pink and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. It costs £15 for the marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. At last year’s event 550 women cycled around the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont and raised a whopping £35,000. In total, four Pedal it Pink events across the UK have raised more than £175,000 to help Campaign fund vital breast cancer research. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
