Press Release For immediate release: 28 February 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Local tutor’s trek to Peru to help beat breast cancer Adventurous fundraiser Amanda Keyte from Gillingham, Dorset is set to embark on the trip of a lifetime by trekking to Machu Picchu in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. The retired dyslexia tutor will lace up her walking boots for the ten-day trip on 9 April 2011 and will take in the beautiful sights of Cusco, followed by the famous Lares hot springs and the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu. Amanda decided to take part and raise money for Campaign after she was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago. Amanda has not been on a trek such as this before so it will be a real challenge for her. The Lares trail is graded as ‘tough’ and reaches an altitude of 4,400m. Nights will be spent in tents at near freezing temperatures. Amanda said: “I had breast cancer four years ago which was caught early and I was given prompt and excellent treatment on the NHS. Raising money for breast cancer research by trekking to Machu Picchu is a wonderful opportunity for me to give something back to the medical profession. I hope lots of people will dig deep to sponsor me for this challenge and help Breast Cancer Campaign continue funding world-class research into this disease.” If you would like to sponsor Amanda please visit www.justgiving.com/amanda-keyte and donate what you can. Every year 48,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer – that’s 130 a day – so if you have been inspired by Amanda’s story and would like to do a fundraising event for Breast Cancer Campaign, please call 0207 749 4114 or visit www.breastcancercampaign.org Ends Picture caption: Amanda Keyte Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 84 research projects, worth over £15.9 million, in 31 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 48,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 130 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
