As part of Breast Cancer Campaign’s Paint the Town Pink fundraising initiative, where the charity aims to turn York as pink as possible throughout October to help fund vital breast cancer research, a group of volunteers have organised a 6k sponsored walk along the river paths of the historic city. To help celebrate the pink month, local residents are being asked to join York’s Pink Walk on Thursday 28 October, starting in Rowntree Park at 7pm. The walk, which will be specially illuminated in pink, is £10 for adults and £5 for children under 16, and includes entry, a goody bag and pink glowsticks to wear while walking. Walkers are also encouraged to wear pink on the day so everyone can add some pink pizzazz to the route. Maria Humphrey, 23, a member of Breast Cancer Campaign’s York volunteer group, said “This year’s Paint the Town Pink has got off to a great start and we’re hoping that York’s Pink Walk will be the highlight of the month-long fundraising initiative. We hope lots of people take part to help us raise fund for breast cancer research.” Lauren Basket, Breast Cancer Campaign Community Development Manager, said “Our York volunteer group have been crucial to helping make our fundraising in the area successful. We hope that everyone will grab a pink glowstick and join our Pink Walk to help us beat breast cancer.” To sign up for York’s Pink Walk or find out how you can get involved in Paint the Town Pink York, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org/paintthetownpink, call 020 7749 3708 or email lbaskett@breastcancercampaign.org ENDS Photos: Notes to editors • Text donation starts from Monday 20 September 2010. • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 104 research projects, worth almost £16.1 million, in 38 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • wear it pink is supported by Vanish www.wearitpink.co.uk • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
