Men, women and children of all ages descended on Sefton Park for the 5k Sunday stroll and raised a whopping £5,000 for breast cancer research. After the walk, everyone returned to the cricket club for mince pies and music by local choir group Singing Our Socks Off. Janice McCabe, from Norris Green, and Christiana Bennett, from Woolton, organised the pre-Christmas event after both their mothers had breast cancer. It’s the third walk they have held in Liverpool and in total all three walks have raised more than £19,400 for Breast Cancer Campaign. Janice said: “Despite the rain the atmosphere on the walk was fantastic with most walkers dressed in amazing costumes, from Father Christmas to fairies! It was amazing to see so many people walking with family and friends while helping to fund breast cancer research and the choir afterwards was brilliant.” Christiana added: “Everyone who took part said they had a really lovely time and it was something extremely fun and meaningful to do on a Sunday morning! Next year we’re determined to make the Mistletoe March even bigger and better so hopefully more people will take part to continue helping Campaign to beat breast cancer.” Sarah England, Events Executive for Breast Cancer Campaign, said: “Janice and Christiana have been dedicated supporters of the charity for the last three years and I’m thrilled their latest fundraising event has been a big success. Everyone had a lovely time on the Mistletoe March, so we’ll return next year to support the 46,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer each year.” If you missed out on the Mistletoe March and would like to hold your own Friendship Walk for Breast Cancer Campaign, please call the Events team on 020 7749 4126 or visit www.friendshipwalks.co.uk Ends Picture caption: Christiana Bennett and Janice McCabe, Walkers in festive fancy dress Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 115 research projects, worth over £15.6 million, in 44 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
