Press Release For immediate release: 2 February 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Nurse calls on local artists to support breast cancer research Carol Evans from Cefn Mawr, Wrexham is calling on local artists, both established and emerging, to donate artwork for sale in an ‘Arts Auction’ in aid of breast cancer campaign as part of her fundraising for the Virgin London Marathon 2011. The event will be taking place in March (date to be confirmed) at The Wynnstay Arms Hotel, Wrexham. For further information on this event, or to donate work for the sale please email artauction@btinternet.com or call 07514 283282. Carol is currently in training for the 26.2mile race on Sunday 17 April and is hoping to reach her fundraising target of £1,500 by holding a number of events in addition to the arts sale, including a charity band night on Thursday 10 February at Central Station, Wrexham. On the night there will be performances from bands including MK Zero, Thunderpig and Subtheme along with VJ sets from West Midlands artists Fowler/Sumner. Tickets are £4 in advance and £6 on the night and are available from www.seetickets.com or Yales Café Bar, 15-17 Hill Street Wrexham. Carol, a professional nurse, decided to support Breast Cancer Campaign after her mother Sal sadly passed away from breast cancer in 2009. Her grandmother Frieda and auntie Janet also both suffered with breast cancer and Frieda passed away in 2010. Carol said: “My grandmother was diagnosed before her 50th birthday and after a great many years of fighting secondary cancers passed away 2010. My mother too was diagnosed before her 50th, and after a four year battle, she passed away in 2009. Then my mother’s sister was also diagnosed, again just before turning 50, but after showing immense courage Janet lives to fight another day. It has left me and my five sisters with a very real fear that breast cancer, in our case, appears to have a strong family connection. This means we all have a commitment to help fund research to find new ways to treat this disease. It is a mother’s duty to protect her children and I see raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign as being the best way I can help reduce the chances of my daughters, or nieces, ever having to cope with this terrible disease.” She added: “I’m excited to run the London Marathon for the Campaign and hope that in some small way I can help them take a step closer to beating breast cancer. I hope lots of people will dig deep and sponsor me for this very worthwhile cause.” To sponsor Carol for the Virgin London Marathon please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/carolevans and donate what you can.
