Press Release For immediate use: 18 January 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Put a spring in your step for breast cancer research Breast Cancer Campaign is urging everyone to blow away those winter cobwebs and step into spring with our walking challenge STEP ON IT. With the new season just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to embrace the great outdoors and walk a step for every person that will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK this year – that’s 46,000 steps – while raising money for research into this disease. You can do this on your own, with friends, colleagues or even walking the dog. Simply ask your loved ones to sponsor you on your walking challenge and help Breast Cancer Campaign take a step closer to beating breast cancer. Loose Women presenter Lisa Maxwell is an ambassador for STEP ON IT, she said: “I’m very proud to support Breast Cancer Campaign’s STEP ON IT initiative to support the many thousands of people affected by this disease in the UK each year. It’s a simple challenge for everyone who wants to raise money for breast cancer research without having to run a marathon or climb a mountain! So please join me and STEP ON IT for Campaign while getting fit along the way.” Events Executive, Elizabeth Cook, added: “In 2009 hundreds of people across the UK did STEP ON IT and we’d love more people in 2010 to lace up their walking boots or trainers to support all those affected by breast cancer. It’s a really easy idea and a great challenge for anyone who loves to walk, so why not step up to a healthier lifestyle and help us to continue funding breast cancer research?” 46,000 steps is approximately 23 miles. To count your steps you could: • Leave your car at home and walk to work each day for a week • Hit the end of season sales on an eight-hour shopping spree at your local shopping centre • Take the family on a day trip through the countryside • Round up your friends and organise a long weekend walk around your hometown Walking is great exercise that’s good for your health; it helps prevent weight gain and boosts energy levels promoting a feeling of general well being. Regular exercise is also important in reducing the risk of a number of diseases including breast cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, colon cancer, and osteoporosis. Sign up today and we will send you a free pedometer, hints and tips on how to count your steps and sponsorship forms.
