Press Release For immediate release: 8 February 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Sankey runner lets Marathon go to her head! Great Sankey resident Linda Moore has pledged to dye her hair pink when she runs the Virgin London Marathon on 17 April in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. Linda, 48, a public relations consultant, will be running her seventh London Marathon and ninth marathon overall, but says this one is special after the death of one of her closest friends. Said Linda: “I hung up my marathon boots in 2001, after deciding that all the training to get to 26 miles was just too much hard work and effort. However, having just lost one of my best friends, Maureen King, to breast cancer I wanted to do something positive in her honour. “During the four years of her illness Maureen raised a lot of money for Breast Cancer Campaign by organising a series of pink balls. I want to carry on that fundraising and if it stops just one person from going through the pain and suffering that Maureen endured it will be worth it.” Linda and Maureen first met nearly 20 years ago when Linda joined the Widnes Wasps Ladies Running Club. “Being an all-women running club it’s inevitable that a number of our members have been affected by breast cancer. Fortunately most have been treated successfully and survived, but Maureen was one of the unlucky ones. I’m doing this marathon for her.” The two friends ran the London Marathon together in 1995 in a time of four hours 32 minutes. “On the day I struggled and it was Maureen who got me through the last few miles. I am sure that she will be with me again every step of the way on 17 April. “My original intention was to raise £2,000 and I said I would dye my hair pink on the day if I reached my target. Thanks to some generous donations from family, friends and clients of Active PR, I’m almost there already, so now I’ve said that for every £500 I get over my target I’ll keep my hair pink for an extra day.” To sponsor Linda – whose best marathon time is three hours 48 minutes – please visit www.justgiving.com/lindabrightmoore and donate what you can. This year around 48,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK and sadly approximately 12,000 will die from this disease. So if you have a guaranteed place in this year’s Virgin London Marathon and would like to make a difference to the lives of all those affected by breast cancer, please join Linda on Campaign’s team. For more information, please call the Events team on 0207 749 4114 or visit www.breastcancercampaign.org. If you have your own place there is no minimum sponsorship amount and each runner who signs up will receive a fundraising pack including a Breast Cancer Campaign running vest, sponsorship forms and lots of support from the charity on the day.
