Press Release For immediate release: 15 March 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Sisters in the saddle to fund breast cancer research Local sisters Claire Learner and Tracey Carey from Barnet will gear up to beat breast cancer this March by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s women-only cycling event, Pedal it Pink. The duo will join hundreds of women at River Lee Country Park on Sunday 28 March to support the 46,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year. Claire, who is a Media Relations Officer at Campaign, said: “Having worked at Breast Cancer Campaign for a number of years, I have met many women and men with breast cancer. Despite having this disease and undergoing months of treatment, many of them run marathons, climb mountains and throw themselves out of aeroplanes. So I thought riding 13 miles on a bike is the least I can do to raise money to help beat breast cancer.” Tracey, a Director at PR agency Fleishman-Hillard, added: “Pretty much everyone knows somebody who has or has had breast cancer, so it’s a cause I am very happy to support. And if it helps increase my fitness at the same time, so much the better!” Claire and Tracey are taking on the half marathon challenge in the park, which is situated on the Herts/Essex border, and hope to raise at least £250. If you would like to help them reach their fundraising target, please visit www.justgiving.com/claireandtracey and donate what you can. Pedal it Pink has a variety of cycle routes to choose from so there is something to suit all abilities. Beginners can opt for the family 5K lap (which is also open to the men and children in your life) and those wishing to push themselves that little bit further can select either a half (13.1miles) or full (26.2miles) marathon distance. All routes are completely enclosed in the park, so it’s safe, traffic-free and suitable for all existing and aspiring cyclists. If you would like to join Claire and Tracey at Pedal it Pink and help put the brakes on breast cancer, please visit www.breastcancercampaign.org, email pedalitpink@breastcancercampaign.org or call 020 7749 3700 to sign up. It costs £15 for the full marathon, £10 for the half marathon and £5 for the family 5k lap. Cycling is a great form of cardiovascular exercise, which helps to burn fat and if done regularly contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Cycling is also great for toning leg muscles and can burn up to 500 calories an hour.
