Press Release For immediate use: 23 November 2009 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Step into Christmas with a Mistletoe March for breast cancer research The festive season is almost upon us and Breast Cancer Campaign wants you to get in the Christmas spirit by taking part in the Mistletoe March Friendship Walk for breast cancer research. This Sunday, locals from across Liverpool will lace up their walking boots for the 5k stroll around Sefton Park to raise vital funds for research into breast cancer. It’s the second time Campaign has held a Friendship Walk in Liverpool this year – in March dedicated Campaign supporters Janice McCabe (nee Melia) from Norris Green and Christiana Bennett from Woolton held the Mersey March walk at Calderstones Park and raised a whopping £8,000 from the 220 walkers who took part. Following its success, Janice and Christiana decided to hold the walk again to after both their mothers sadly passed away from breast cancer. Janice said: “I was amazed by the success of the last Friendship Walk which is why we have decided to do another. Everybody knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer, my own mum lost her battle against breast cancer at only 55 years of age, and knowing that you have helped to raise money to find newer and better treatments and possibly, one day, a cure is a really good feeling. The atmosphere is great on the day and loads of people get dressed up in all their pink gear – even the dogs! So why not take a couple of hours out of your Sunday and join us for a lovely walk around the park and help raise funds for Breast Cancer Campaign!” Sarah England, Events Executive for Breast Cancer Campaign, added: “Every year 5,300 women in the North West are diagnosed with breast cancer and 300 of those diagnoses are made in Liverpool, so we hope lots of people will dig out their Christmas hats and accessories and join us on the walk to support this very worthwhile cause.” Registration for the Mistletoe March, which starts at 11am at the Cricket Club, is £10 for adults and £2.50 for children under 16. The fancy dress theme is festive and each walker is encouraged to raise sponsorship for taking part. The top fundraiser will receive two complimentary tickets for a horseracing day at Haydock Park in 2010. After the walk everyone will be served some Christmas treats such as mulled wine, mince pies, tea and coffee plus Santa may even make an appearance.
