Press Release For immediate release: 5 July 2010 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org Walkers step up to beat breast cancer on the Heath Hampstead Heath turned pink yesterday (Sunday 4 July) as hundreds of walkers from across London took part in the annual Generations Walk for Breast Cancer Campaign. Families, friends and locals looking to enjoy the sunshine and support Breast Cancer Campaign, joined in the 12th annual Generations Walk and stomped across the heath for the five-mile sponsored walk. Since 1999, 3000 walkers have stepped up to beat breast cancer and raised a whopping £252,000, which has supported seven different research projects funded by Campaign. Walk founder and organiser, Cheryl Stakol, was thrilled with the amazing level of support. She said: “Thanks to Ann Furness and a hard working committee we were once again able to enjoy raising funds for Breast Cancer Campaign - to see the new generation of over 40 children taking part, the youngest was five months in her stroller, and the others walking five miles was indeed heart-warming. Over the years, many people return to the event to show their support for Cheryl and her team and their commitment to supporting vital breast cancer research. Elizabeth Mendes da Costa, Head of Events at Breast Cancer Campaign, added: “Cheryl has been a fantastic fundraiser for Campaign over the years and we’re so grateful for her continued support. The Generations Walk has gone from strength to strength and everyone had a lovely time on Sunday. It was great to see so many families enjoying a nice a day out while raising money for his worthwhile cause.” If you did not take part in the Generations Walk but would like to organise your own walk for Breast Cancer Campaign, please call Breast Cancer Campaign on 0207 749 4114 or visit www.breastcancercampaign.org Ends Picture caption: Cheryl Stakol and walkers at the Generations Walk 2010 Notes to editors • Breast Cancer Campaign aims to beat breast cancer by funding innovative world-class research to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure • Currently it supports 108 research projects, worth over £16.5 million, in 39 centres of excellence across the UK and Ireland • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women • In the UK, nearly 46,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year - that’s 125 a day • Visit www.breastcancercampaign.org • Read Chief Executive Pamela Goldberg’s blog http://pamelagoldbergblog.blogspot.com/
