Press Release For immediate release: 7 February 2011 Press contact: Louise Garrahan, Media Relations Officer, Breast Cancer Campaign, DD 0207 749 3724, Email: lgarrahan@breastcancercampaign.org World record breaker set to run Marathon for breast cancer research Budding runner, Ricardo Braganza, from Ilford, Essex has laced up his running shoes to start training for the Virgin London Marathon in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign. The maths student, who set a Guinness world record for playing the world’s longest football match in October, has his sights on a new challenge to complete the 26.2mile race on Sunday 17 April in under four hours. So far he has raised more than £18,000 to help fund breast cancer research after his mother was diagnosed with the disease in 2008. Ricardo, 21, said: “In October I set a new world record for the world’s longest football match by playing for 60 hours with my fellow teammates at Loughborough University. I organised the challenge to raise money for my London Marathon Golden Bond place and I’m thrilled to have raised more than £18,000 from my football-athon. Now I’ve got a new goal to aim for and I can’t wait to take part in the Marathon for Campaign and continue helping their mission to beat breast cancer.” Lee Scott MP for North Ilford has given Ricardo his full backing for the running challenge. He said: “I'm delighted that Ricardo in my constituency is running the London Marathon for Breast Cancer Campaign. He has been done a fantastic job with his fundraising so far and I’m thrilled to hear he has broken a Guinness World Record in the process. I wish him lots of luck throughout his training and hope more people will sponsor him to help the charity continue funding world-class breast cancer research.” To help Ricardo reach his fundraising target of £25,000 please visit www.virginmoneygiving.com/ricardobraganza and donate what you can. This year around 48,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK and sadly approximately 12,000 will die from this disease.
