Release Date: 10 December 2010 Drivers Direct beats the ‘Big Freeze’ to deliver the goods A specialist driver recruitment agency has been working hard to beat the ‘Big Freeze’ and keep Britain moving as arctic weather conditions have threatened to bring it to a standstill. Drivers Direct, one of the UK’s leading providers of drivers and driver training, has pulled out all the stops to ensure that its large retail and road haulier customers have been able to meet their deadlines at what is the busiest time of the year in the lead up to Christmas. Last week more than 400 lorries were stranded on the M25 alone, as many parts of the UK came to a standstill in the bad weather. And this week as the misery continued on the roads, lorry drivers had to use their skills and experience to avoid problems. Drivers Direct drivers managed to avoid the worst of the hold-ups, and have worked closely with transport managers to keep everything on schedule as much as possible. The government’s relaxation of the legal driving restrictions has also helped with lorry drivers being allowed some extra time driving to help clear any backlogs caused by the snow. With the bad weather set to continue and with only two more weeks to Christmas, drivers and transport managers are going to be kept busy. Drivers Direct reported record levels of driver hours last Friday, and are likely to beat that record this week. Gethin Roberts, Drivers Direct Managing Director, said: “At Drivers Direct we thrive on ensuring our customers receive the highest quality service whatever the weather. This is traditionally the busiest time of the year for transport with additional demands placed on the industry leading up to Christmas. Coupled with the potentially disastrous implication of the snow and ice over the last few weeks, the challenges facing the industry at what is already a hectic time of year have been exacerbated considerably. “Fortunately our experience and ability to cope has under pressure have helped minimise the impact for our customers. All our consultants, staff and drivers have gone the extra mile in the last couple of weeks to ensure lorries meet their delivery deadlines. I’m glad to say that not only are we able to cope well under pressure, but we are also helping our customers with the increased demand being placed on them as a result of the weather.” -Ends- Editor’s Note: Drivers Direct was set up in 2002 by four partners. Today, it is owned by three partners and run by Gethin Roberts, managing director and his management team, all of whom have backgrounds in both Recruitment and Distribution. The company specialises in the recruitment and placement of temporary and permanent drivers of all classes. Drivers Direct prides itself on the ability to work closely with clients and applicants to ensure that a quality service is provided overall. Drivers Direct employs 28 staff and has branches in Runcorn, Feltham, Sutton, Preston and Eastleigh and franchises in Northampton, Nuneaton, Leicester and Ashford. The company’s core business is driver recruitment and it has always tried to employ people who know about transport rather than just recruitment. Almost all of its consultants come from a transport, rather than recruitment background.
