Release Date: 28th April 2010 Good Garage Scheme member in election spotlight A member of the UK-wide Good Garage Scheme came under the media spotlight when Conservative leader David Cameron dropped in for a visit. In the run-up to the General Election, Mr Cameron visited Exeter-based MECA (Mechanical Engineering Care Assured) Services to discuss how government can better assist small businesses. He spoke to owner Jennifer Riach, Exeter’s only award-winning lady garage owner, and found out more about her forthcoming climb to Kilimanjaro’s summit for Sparks – the children’s medical research charity. His visit prompted a surge of interest from MECA’s local newspapers as well as national TV news teams. Jennifer said: “He was coming to Devon for a private meeting and wanted to take the opportunity to visit a small business. He specifically asked to come and visit us as he had heard about our award as Employer of the Year from the Federation of Small Businesses. He was particularly interested in how small businesses had survived during the recession and wanted to find out what the Government could do for them. “He had also heard about my Kilimanjaro venture and took a personal interest in the trip. He was with us for about an hour-and-a-half and sent a letter thanking us with a hand written note saying ‘I really enjoyed my visit’.” MECA is a member of the Good Garage Scheme, which was launched by Forté nearly four years ago, and now has more than 2,800 independent garage and workshop members throughout the UK.
