Release Date: 6 May 2010 UKWCT celebrates 15 years of helping wolves with wild Bank Holiday fun VISITORS to the UK Wolf Conservation Trust’s (UKWCT’s) 15th birthday celebrations will be in for some wild bank holiday fun. The Trust is celebrating 15 years of helping wolves in the wild by hosting an Open Day at its Education Centre in Reading on Monday, May 31. Visitors will be able to view the UKWCT’s own ambassador wolves and take part in lots of fun activities running throughout the day. The wolves at the centre were all born in May and as a birthday treat a special cake is also being made for them to tuck into. Trust director Tsa Palmer has kept wolves for 30 years and formed the UKWCT in 2005 with her late husband, Roger, for conservation of wolves in the wild. The wolves at the UKWCT act as ambassadors in helping to educate people about wolves, and dispelling the myths and legends that surround them. “Our Open Days are very popular, and people can come along and see the work we do for wolf conservation,” said Tsa. “In the past 15 years we have been very busy supporting many projects throughout Europe, and have donated over £80,000 for research and education.” UKWCT’s open day will also see the launch of the book World of Wolves: New Perspectives on Ecology, Behaviour, and Management (Energy, Ecology, and the Envirionment) by editors Marco Musiani, Luigi Boitani and Paul Paquet. The book – the second of a two-part series - offers a fresh and provocative look at current trends in wolf and wildlife management. Representative case studies, from geographically and culturally diverse areas of the world, highlight the existing interconnections between wolves, their prey, their habitat, their ecosystems and people, and the role of science in policy formation and wolf management. It will appeal to conservationists, scientists, wildlife managers, and anyone seeking a better understanding of wolves and their co-existence with humans. -Ends- Editor’s note:- The UK Wolf Conservation Trust (UKWCT) has six ambassador wolves housed in its three huge enclosures at its Reading headquarters. It provides financial support to a number of wolf conservation projects in Bulgaria, Croatia, Ethiopia and Russia. The Trust’s education centre in Reading gives visitors the opportunity to meet wolves and it also hosts a wide range of events and activities to promote conservation in all its guises to school children of all ages. It also provides interesting and rewarding work experience opportunities for college and university students.
