A Swedish company is developing the world’s first all-in-one self-care device for diabetics

The number of people with diabetes is rapidly growing on a global scale. According to The World Health Organization (WHO) the increase in people with diagnosed diabetes has epidemic proportions. (http://www.who.int/diabetes/en/) Today there are 346 million people with diabetes, a figure which is expected to rise to 500 million people in 2030. In Europe and the U.S. alone there are today 92 million people living with diabetes, a number which is expected to rise to 119 million people in 2030.

For millions of people with diabetes, everyday living is complicated and unsecure. As of today, they need to monitor their blood sugar concentration between six to eight times daily. This procedure is necessary in order to decide whether or not they need to inject insulin, and if so which dose that is required to keep the blood glucose level stable.

Diabetes doctors recommend that a diabetic should use five different products; an injection device where you have your insulin, a blood glucose meter, that needs to have test strips, a lancet to get your drop of blood and with that a blood glucose reading as well as a journal to keep track of which activities you did, your blood glucose value and the insulin dose you took. This is regardless whether you are at home, at work or outside.

A main cause to a diabetic’s troublesome self-care is the fact that there are two different and separate industries which produce the diabetes appliances today. There are suppliers for blood glucose meters, test strips, and lancets. Secondly there are industries that provide insulin and different types of injection accessories.

So far none of the suppliers have produced a single product which combines all of the purposes in one single instrument. Instead the diabetic has had to adapt to the equipment, rather than having the equipment being adapted to the diabetic.

Brighter One all-in-one replaces five diabetes devices

This has been the case up until now. Brighter AB develops and has patented the world’s first diabetes self-care device that combines all the features in one single product - Brighter One™. In other words, for the first time, blood sampling, blood glucose measuring, insulin injection and journal keeping is collected in the same housing. Just like your regular smartphone, you can bring all your necessary equipment in a pocket-friendly pack, which makes it easy to bring along.

Brighter One™ is a long sought-after device among insulin-treated diabetics. Among other things 75% of all diabetics would prefer an integrated solution for self-care that includes these devices according to a published study. (Journal of Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes (2005)) Brighter One™ has also received positive response from diabetes nurses, doctors as well as people working in the diabetes industry. Lars Wibell, associate professor at the Uppsala University Hospital as well as one of Sweden’s most famous diabetes experts, is Brighter’s scientific advisor.

Brighter has already received an order worth 24 million SEK

During 2011 Brighter AB started a collaboration regarding distribution and marketing in the Nordic countries, together with Rubin Medical (one of the leading distributors within diabetes products). Rubin Medical also placed a first order consisting of 5000 units to an estimated value of approximately 24 million SEK.

Despite the harsh condition of the world’s financial markets during the last autumn, 275 Swedish and international investors invested more than 4 million SEK in the company’s Initial Public Offering. Brighter AB was listed on February the 3rd 2012 on AktieTorget, and is now in the process of starting the already planned CE-marking and production.
