Wooden toys from BRIO are getting attention due to an exhibition initiated by the American Bard Graduate Center in New York. The exhibition focuses on Swedish wooden toy culture from the late 1600s to the 21st century and includes more than 250 wooden toys from various Swedish brands. The Exhibition opened June 19 at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

The Swedish toy company BRIO has a total of 54 items on display, with toys dating from 1907 to 2006. Examples include the Osby Horse (1907), Volvo Cars (1946), cars from the 1930s and onwards, as well as various trains.

– We are proud that our toy heritage now can be seen and experienced by a large international audience, especially since we celebrate our 130th anniversary this year. Free play has always had a central role and is the foundation of our company. This becomes particularly clear when one sees the extent of old toys we have in the exhibition, says Sophie Elvefors, Deputy Managing Director of BRIO.

– Free play is not only important for children to enjoy them¬selves and feel good. It also increases their ability to see things from different perspectives and it encourages creative thinking, continues Sophie Elvefors.

The exhibition is based on toy collections from the museum Lekoseum in Osby Sweden, documents from Italian Sovrintendenza Capitolina in Rome as well as from the museum Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris among others.

The exhibition is open to the public June 19, 2014 - January 11, 2015 at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris. The exhibition is then planned to move to New York and later to Stockholm.
