Professor Richard Dawkins this weekend received an award in recognition of his services to Humanism at the annual conference of the British Humanist Association (BHA), held at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. The two day conference is entitled ‘Beyond Tomorrow’ explored visions of the future, from the apocalyptic to the utopian.

Professor Richard Dawkins was the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Oxford (until 2008) and Honorary Vice-President of the British Humanist Association. His published works include The Selfish Gene, Unweaving the Rainbow , Climbing Mount Improbable, The Devil’s Chaplain,  and The God Delusion.

During his association with the BHA, Professor Dawkins has supported a range of campaigns, including the Census Campaign, Protest the Pope, and the famous ‘Atheist Bus’ adverts. Professor Dawkins has also signed letters to the Government along with eminent scientists and educators in calling for vital changes to the proposed science curriculum for primary schools in England and spoken at numerous BHA events.

Dawkins joins the ranks of formidable humanists who have received previous BHA awards, including author Phillip Pullman, evolutionary biologist Julian Huxley, and philosopher A J Ayer.

Chief Executive of the BHA Andrew Copson commented on the award:, ‘Richard Dawkins is known for his brilliant and accessible writing on science and evolution and for his consistent and courageous defence of truth, science, and scientific method against superstition and unreason. His clear and rational arguments have been the catalyst for many people embracing humanist beliefs and values, and supporting the campaigns of the BHA. Richard’s has been one of the strongest voices in public debate on issues from ‘faith’ schools and their ability to discriminate, to freedom of speech. We are delighted to be able to recognise the important contribution he has made globally.’
