The National Trust to review Giant’s Causeway exhibition

The National Trust have announced that they are to review the content of their exhibition at the new Giant’s Causeway visitor centre.  The exhibition generated controversy by appearing to suggest that creationism can provide an alternative explanation of the site’s formation.  The Giant’s Causeway, located on the County Antrim coast in Northern Ireland, includes spectacular basalt columns which were formed by volcanic eruptions up to 60 million years ago.  However, an audio exhibition in the new visitor centre contains a reference to the creationist view of the site’s origin, and claims that

Groups submit bids to open 2013 Free Schools as BHA lists applicants

Today is the deadline for submitting a bid to open a Free School in 2013 , as part of the ‘third wave’ of applications. 337 groups have indicated  to the New Schools Network that they intend to bid. Government changes Free School model funding agreement to ban creationist schools

The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed a new revision of the model funding agreement for Free Schools  by the Government in order to preclude ‘the teaching, as an evidence-based view or theory, of any view or theory that is contrary to established scientific and/or historical evidence and explanations.’ This highly significant change has been made in order to ban creationism from being taught in Free Schools, and prevent creationist groups from opening schools.

More creationist Free Schools planned for 2013 opening

More Free Schools are being planned for opening in 2013 by creationists or groups with links to a creationist organisation, the British Humanist Association (BHA) has learned. Everyday Champions Church Free School bid rejected due to creationism

Everyday Champions Church’s bid to open a Free School was rejected solely due to concerns about creationism, the group have announced. The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed the news, and commends the Department for Education (DfE) in seeing reason in rejecting the bid.In February, church leader Pastor Gareth Morgan stated that  ‘Creationism will be taught as the belief of the leadership of the school. Everyday Champions Church, the group bidding to set up a creationist Free School, have announced  that their proposal has passed the first round of applications and is through to the interview stage of the process.
