Baroness Warsi gets it wrong again

At a speech to be given during a visit to the Vatican, Baroness Warsi will once again criticise 'militant secularisation' as 'intolerant' and 'illiberal' and call for Christianity and 'Christian values' to be reaffirmed in Europe. It is not the first time that the minister has called secularism ‘intolerant and illiberal’. She has also said that religious people contribute more to society than the non religious, has championed religious groups as being at the heart of the ‘Big Society’, and even tried to amend the Equality Bill in a way which would leave humanists unprotected against

BHA welcomes High Court ruling on council prayers

The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed the ruling of the High Court that the saying of prayers as part of a formal council meeting is not lawful under the Local Government Act 1972.Pavan Dhaliwal, BHA Head of Public Affairs commented, 'The practice of saying Christian prayers in local councils and in other public bodies, like the Westminster Parliament, is archaic, divisive and inappropriate. There has been progress in some councils which have seen prayers abolished and in new institutions like the Scottish Parliament, which was founded without the same tradition of prayers.

‘A great loss to humanism’: BHA mourns Christopher Hitchens

The British Humanist Association (BHA) is today mourning the death of Christopher Hitchens, a great loss to Humanism, who brought some of the clearest, most eloquent arguments for reason, political secularism, and humanist ethics to a worldwide audience.A prolific writer and inspiring orator, Hitchens brought his own brand of unbelief to mass audiences, becoming part of the 'new atheist' publishing phenomenon with his 2007 work ‘God Is Not Great’, but had for many years been an activist for secularism and many of the other causes dear to humanists. Welsh Government launches consultation on introducing ‘opt-out’ organ donation

The Welsh Government has launched  a consultation  proposing to replace the current ‘opt-in’ system of organ donation with the ‘soft opt-out’ system, becoming the first part of the UK to do so. Regulatory body to investigate “proselytising” GP in open hearing

An NHS doctor who has been reported to have discussed Christianity ‘thousands of times’  with patients is being investigated next week by the General Medical Council (GMC), the regulatory body for doctors, following a complaint made earlier this year. The British Humanist Association (BHA) has said that doctors have a duty of care to patients that does not include proselytising.Dr Richard Scott, a former missionary and a lay preacher, has opted to have an oral hearing which is open to the public
