BROSTRÖMS NAMES NEW TANKER IN SPAIN A third 16,500 dwt chemical and product tanker vessel, in a series of three, is due for delivery to United Tankers, a subsidiary of Broströms, within the next months. At a naming ceremony on 12 June in Vigo, Spain, the vessel was named UNITED ATLAND. The baptizing lady was Mrs Helen Dreijer, the wife of the former chairman of Broströms, Mr Per Dreijer. The UNITED ATLAND is being built at the Spanish yard Factorias Vulcano SA in Vigo located on the Spanish Atlantic coast. The vessel is built in accordance with Swedish standards with ice class 1-A and equipped with an automated and closed cargo handling system. The construction with the double hull and the choice of equipment has been made taking into account all the high environmental and safety regulations, which apply to product and chemical tankers. The vessel will be employed under the various contracts of affreightment in the distribution of refined oil products within Northern Europe, where Broströms is the market leader in the segment between 12,000 and 18,000 dwt with a fleet of eleven vessels. Two additional vessels in the same segment are under construction. These vessels are equipped with stainless steel cargo tanks. Delivery will take place later this year and next year respectively. One of these vessels is built for an external investor, whereas Broströms will own the other one. Both tankers will be added to the Broström tanker fleet, which exceeds 50 in numbers and 1.5 million in dwt. As a result of the systematic modernisation of the fleet going on within Broströms since 1995, more than 70 % of the owned fleet has an age not exceeding four years, whilst only 15 % of the world tanker fleet up to 80,000 dwt has such a low age.
