Mrs Ethel Couch, a resident of Bupa’s Amerind Grove Nursing Home, Ashton, Bristol, is looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday on Wednesday 8 September. Ethel was born in 1910 and grew up in the Chessals in Bedminster, later moving to Southville with her husband. Her father, a Baptist minister, wanted Ethel to become a missionary but Ethel had a soft spot for the boys and instead took up a post in Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) in 1941. Ethel worked for the WAAF for four years, overseeing 200 women and has numerous stories of her exploits within the Air Force. One such story tells of a time when a bystander watching the parade of 150 WAF women travelling through the streets of Worcester, commented about Ethel: ‘Don’t that sergeant wobble her backside!’ Before moving to Amerind Grove, Ethel used to live in a large house where she kept a range of antiques, her favourites being her blue and white china set. She still has a passion for antiques and loves to watch a number of antiques programmes on the television. Ethel enjoys shopping and cooking and is fond of politics. She still enjoys to partake in a daily slice of cake and a cup of tea in the lounge with the other residents. Lesley Weir, home manager at Bupa’s Amerind Grove Nursing Home, says: “We are delighted to share this special occasion with Ethel. She is really looking forward to reaching the 100 landmark and we hope it will be a really special day for her.”
