Mrs Iris Bird, a resident of Bupa’s Monmouth Court Nursing Home, Ipswich, Suffolk, is looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday on Thursday 17 June. The home will hold a party on Saturday 19 June from 3pm with music and refreshments for her friends and family. Iris was born in 1910 in Ipswich and attended St Peter’s School where she won a scholarship to an art school. With her parents unable to fund her education, she instead took up an apprenticeship at Frederick Corders. She married her husband Earn in her early 20’s and began to work from home where she created suits, wedding dresses and button holes. The couple went on to have their daughter Janet in 1939 and Iris now has two grand children, one great grand son and another great grand child on the way. Iris loved holidaying abroad and visited places including Italy and Spain. Being a very sociable person, Iris enjoys visiting the pictures, dancing and sewing and the occasional glass of Bailey’s. Iris has been a resident at Monmouth Court for five years and is a much loved lady by staff and residents. Claudette Lyons, home manager at Bupa’s Monmouth Court Nursing Home, says: “All the staff and residents at Monmouth Court are delighted to share this special occasion with Iris. We hope she enjoys her party. It will be a really exciting day for her to spend with her friends and family and she is excited about receiving her telegraph from the Queen. Iris is a much loved resident and an inspiration to us all.”
