Bupa’s Alexandra Nursing Home, Long Eaton, Nottingham is celebrating its £237k refurbishment with a wartime street party. On Thursday 17 February staff, residents and visitors will dress in ‘40s style and recreate a party like the ones popular at the end of the Second World War. The party will run the length of the home’s main corridor, which has been redecorated as part of a recent refurbishment programme. The Alexandra is one of Bupa’s many care homes that specialise in caring for people with dementia. Each home has specially trained staff to ensure that residents receive individual expert care and support. Reminiscence activities are a powerful way of helping empower people with dementia by access long-term memories. Gerry Martin, home manager said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the refurbishment and we are very proud to be able to offer such a lovely environment in which we can provide dedicated care for people who have dementia.” The Alexandra operates the ‘person first, dementia second’ approach, developed by Dr Graham Stokes, Director of Dementia Care for Bupa. Each resident can make their own choices about what to do and when to do it. Corridors and communal areas hold memory prompts and interesting items for residents to look at on their own or with friends.
