Discover Finnish maritime expertise at Nor-Shipping in Oslo

Report this content

There is a strong demand for polar cruise ship know-how and solutions in shipyards around the world. Finnish maritime technology and solutions are exceptionally well suited for the new polar cruise ships.

Finnish companies with world-class maritime expertise and solutions are participating in the Nor-Shipping international shipping exhibition and conference in Oslo, focusing particularly on the growing global market for Polar Class cruise ships.

For example, Norwegian shipyard Vard is about to build 4 expedition cruise ships for Ponant Quartet and 2 for Hapaq-Lloyd Cruises. Norwegian Kleven has 2 (+2) orders for Arctic hybrid cruisers for Hurtigruten and German shipyard MV Werften is building at least 5 Polar class mega-yachts for Genting Hong Kong. Furthermore, China Group is to build 4 (+6) expedition cruise ships in Shanghai.

“The Finnish maritime industry has long experience in cruise ship design and engineering, and is globally recognized for its innovation and reliability. This includes the specialist technology and know-how for winterization required in the construction of ships for demanding polar conditions. Finnish companies are working with the leading shipyards around the world, including projects in the luxury cruise market,” says Ulla Lainio, Director of Finpro’s Maritime and Offshore from Finland Program.

As an example, ABB Marine and Ports will supply the complete power, propulsion and automation package selected for Crystal Cruises’ luxury Polar Class 6 mega-yachts built by MV Werften for Genting Hong Kong. ABB Marine and Ports is a pioneer of the Azipod® propulsion systems developed in Finland that have enabled cruise operators to push both technological and geographical boundaries for two decades.

Solutions by the leading Finnish software developer CADMATIC are used in most of the biggest luxury cruise ships around the world. CADMATIC is demonstrating its new 3D visualization core at the Nor-Shipping exhibition, which takes modelling aesthetics to a new level by producing highly realistic 3D objects with accurate edges, shades and clip cap surfaces that enable faster design work.

Trusted solutions from Finland

Finland offers a unique supplier network of more than 1000 maritime companies covering the entire shipbuilding value chain, including ship design and engineering, system and equipment suppliers, material and component suppliers, interior and metal works subcontractors, and turnkey suppliers.

“Finnish companies are forerunners when it comes to environmentally friendly technology and developing solutions that improve efficiency, reliability and safety under harsh winter conditions. The new polar cruise ships built in Norway, Germany and other countries need the best solutions and I warmly invite global shipbuilders and the media to explore what the Finnish companies have to offer,” says Lainio, who is available for interview in Oslo on 30 May – 1 June.

As part of Finland’s centenary celebrations, Finpro, the Finnish trade promotion organization, and six Finnish companies are organising a Finland 100 networking event in Oslo attended by Erik Lundberg, Ambassador of Finland in Norway. The Finnish companies participating in event are All Star Engineering, Cadmatic, Craftmer, Elomatic, Promeco and The Switch.

The Switch is advancing the world of electrical drive trains in marine. In 2016, the company acquired Wärtsilä’s marine drives business encompassing megawatt-class power drives. This Yaskawa-backed investment enables The Switch to offer a stronger machine & drive package, broader product range and wider market access.

Today, The Switch creates drive train solutions specifically optimized for marine applications. The company is now broadening its marine business portfolio with permanent magnet applications, an area that is growing rapidly with the acceptance of this technology to help vessels become more efficient by slashing operating costs.

The Switch’s power drive products, already used as proven elements for over a decade within Wärtsilä’s systems, have passed various approval requirements. Currently, hundreds of ships are sailing with these rugged drives, making them attractive to marine customers who want to reduce risk while upgrading to more advanced drive train solutions and hybrid systems.

With an installed base of over 13 GW, The Switch’s innovative drive trains are making an impact by lowering the cost of energy and operations.
