Aerospace Industry Benefits from World Class Benchmarking Programme

Business Impact, the national training and apprenticeship provider is working with the North West Aerospace Alliance (NWAA), to implement a programme of training to increase the skills base in the aerospace industry. Using a defined model for world class global benchmarking, the NWAA has been able to identify the specific areas of skills development required across the whole sector/supply chain, and worked with Business Impact to deliver high quality skills training.

The first skills area identified as requiring support was in Statistical Process Control, and so Business Impact developed a 5 day training programme, which was then opened up to all NWAA members for their employees. The success of the training and approach taken has been measured in a number of ways, with the immediate excellent feedback from delegates who received the training.

The NWAA also monitored and evaluated the quality of the training, and used benchmarking techniques to understand very specifically the impact of the training. In most cases, there was a notable improvement in the skills of individuals taking the course, against key benchmarked exercises set before and after the training.

The NWAA is the key industry organisation in the region, representing and uniting companies and organisations involved in the aerospace sector supply chain. NWAA’s mission is to provide a fully integrated support structure for North West Aerospace companies. The NWAA is responsible for shaping the industry through strategic thinking and delivery, by driving innovation and providing supply chain excellence and other business support programmes.

The NWAA achieve this through working with key stakeholders within the industry to develop products, services and supply chain development programmes that will shape the industry for the future. The ASCE 2 Programme looks to improve the performance of organisations in the region by creating a Skills Capacity Model and utilising a Global Benchmarking tool. This approach has led to the training programme which has been delivered by Business Impact.

The original course was delivered to 12 personnel working in the aerospace sector, with a further programme being planned for September 2013.

For those attending this week long training programme in SPC the benefits were clear and comments from delegates included; ‘I found the whole course very useful,’ and ‘senior personnel within our company would highly benefit,’ from the training programme. The essence of this training was to put into practice the skills developed and identify improvements which could be made within the participating organisations.

Rachel Brickell, Skills Manager at the North West Aerospace Alliance commented: ‘We selected Business Impact to deliver our SPC training because they were easy to deal with, very flexible and had a clear customer focus. All our training supports our benchmark process, and having a training partner who can deliver a high quality consistently, but also looks at ways in which our benchmarking process can be monitored, was essential. Business Impact have achieved solid results, and the training delivered is having a notable effect on the individuals and the companies they work with. Creating a world class set of organisations in the region will increase the productivity, profitability and long term security of the whole aerospace industry, which is vital to the North West region.’

Nick Atkinson, National Sales Manager at Business Impact commented; ‘The North West Aerospace Alliance is a vital link between employers across the region, and their benchmarking programme is ensuring a highly skilled workforce for the future of our aerospace industry. We have worked hard to ensure our training support really delivers the quality that is needed, and an effective way of monitoring the business improvements and benchmarking of employee skills, which will ensure the aerospace industry is world class.’
