Cabonline first in Sweden with wireless charging of electric cars

On 3 March 2022, Cabonline will start operating Sweden's first taxis with wireless charging in Gothenburg. The project is based on completely new technology and is a crucial step in making Cabonline in Region Väst fossil-free by the end of 2025. With the technology, the cars will be charged automatically during, for example, pick ups and drop offs.

“We have an ambitious climate target to offer completely fossil-free transportation in the Gothenburg region by the end of 2025. The wireless charging of our vehicle fleet will make a huge difference in achieving this goal. Each taxi drives an average of 10,000 kilometres per month, with large amounts of CO2 and particle emissions released. The new cars will be available, for example, for both transportation services and regular taxi journeys, making it easier for more people to live in a climate-smart way," says Sasa Vejzovic, Regional Manager for Cabonline in Region Väst.

On 3 March, Cabonline will start operating Volvo XC40 Recharge cars powered by electricity that can be charged wirelessly with new technology developed for this project. The charging plates are placed in the street and manufactured by Momentum Dynamics. The cars have been modified by Volvo Cars to enable them to be charged wirelessly, which is done using magnetic fields.

“For Cabonline, it is a clear goal to be the first company to wirelessly charge electric cars in Sweden and to test new technology. We already have a goal to buy only fossil-free vehicles in the Gothenburg region from 2023 and this is a solution to electric cars’ range limitations.  In the Gothenburg region, we perform around 1,000,000 trips a year. When all these trips can be made without any fossil emissions, there will be a very positive climate and environmental impact throughout the region," says Sasa Vejzovic, Regional Manager for Cabonline in Region Väst.

How do you book one of these taxis?

The taxis will become part of Taxi Kurir's vehicle fleet in the Gothenburg region. The cars have a specific profile and will be easy to recognise in the city.  The cars can be booked via both the app and by phone. If you see an available electric car in town, just flag it down.

About the project

The project is a collaboration between Cabonline, Vattenfall Incharge, Volvo Cars, Momentum Dynamics, Göteborg Energi and Business Region Göteborg. It is part of the Gothenburg Green City Zone where companies, community stakeholders and researchers will develop, test, and scale up new technologies for vehicles and infrastructure. The goal is for all transportation in parts of Gothenburg to be completely emission-free by 2030 – and the electricity used to be green. Initially, the project comprises of four charging stations at two different locations in Gothenburg.
