The 9th Annual Mike Metcalfe 30 Hour Soccer Marathon for Cancer – Player Drive

CALGARY – The 9thAnnual Mike Metcalfe 30 Hour Soccer Marathon for Cancer is set to go on November 2 and 3 – but there is still room for more players. Anyone interested in registering for the tournament can sign up at www.soccermarathon.org. 

Over the past eight years the event has raised more than $450,000 that Calgary Health Trust has used to purchase cancer-related diagnostic and treatment equipment for the Foothills Hospital. The Soccer Marathon has seen more than 6400 participants play over 270 hours of soccer.  This year the event will raise money for Calgary Health Trust to purchase a FotoFinder dermoscope for individuals at high risk for malignant melanoma. The machine photographs, analyses, scores and save images of the moles and means that abnormal moles can be detected quickly and any changes monitored.

The Soccer Marathon began in the fall of 2004 after Mike was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Mike’s friends rallied together after watching him endure over 500 hours of chemotherapy and treatment for his cancer. Since Mike is an avid soccer player, the concept of a 30 hour soccer marathon seemed fitting.
