5 Best Places in California to Wake Up in a Vineyard
SACRAMENTO, CA [September 21, 2017]—Not everyone can own their own vineyard, but a stay at a winery or a working vineyard gives travelers a chance to wake up in one. Beyond sampling wines in a tasting room, guests have the opportunity to tour the vineyards without the crowds and watch the sunrise over the rolling hills draped with vines. The California Association of Boutique & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) has compiled a list of bed and breakfast inns nestled among California’s vineyards.
For a place all to yourself in Paso Robles wine country, rent out the beautifully-restored farmhouse at HammerSky Vineyards. The elegant, 1904 colonial farmhouse sits on a 50-acre, family-owned vineyard with a small winery, tasting room, barn, and graceful old oaks. Once the home to the family of a pioneer farmer and pastor, each room of the house offers different views of the vineyard. The family dining room is perfect for gazing out the zinfandel and the cattle grazing in the meadow. The upstairs deck provides a panoramic of the vineyards and the 400-year-old oak tree the owners call Uncle Dan. From the porch swing, guests can enjoy views of the lawn areas strung with lights, the vineyards beyond, and the tasting room, which serves a variety of estate wines and a special SDB which is an unfiltered, straight from the barrel single varietal.
On the far western reaches of Paso Robles, Justin Winery is renowned for crafting premium Bordeaux-style blends. Tucked behind its tasting room and restaurant, the exquisite JUST Inn is a luxurious vineyard hideaway. Each of the suites are named for one of Justin’s signature wines and feature fireplaces, Tempur-Pedic® mattresses, Frette linens, hydro-spa tubs and mid-century modern furnishings with a soothing pale green palette. A stay includes breakfast delivered to the room and a winery tour and tasting, but don’t miss the restaurant’s five-course, farm-to-table, wine-pairing dinner. Modern opulence reigns at the three-suite Inn at Opolo in Paso Robles. Built in 2008 and surrounded by nearly 100 acres of grapes, the inn is nestled into a hillside a short walk from Opolo Vineyards’ tasting room. The spacious suites feature fireplaces, Italian linens, king beds draped with feather duvets, glass-enclosed tiled showers, and jetted soaking tubs for two. French doors from each of the suites open to a sunny, wrap-around veranda with comfortable lounge chairs and vineyard views. A charming pair of wooden swings hang from the branches of an old oak tree. There’s also a bocce ball court, walking paths through the vineyards, and complimentary wine tasting at the tasting room. The tasting room pours great wines and a relaxed vibe that spills out onto the patio overlooking merlot and zinfandel vines.
Amador Harvest Inn is tucked away on 40 acres of rolling vineyards, elegant oak trees and tranquil lakes. The classically-furnished, Cape Cod-style inn is owned and operated by one of Shenandoah Valley's oldest farming families, the Deavers. Each of the four guest rooms is named for grape varietals surrounding the inn and includes a complimentary homemade breakfast. Sample wines in the Deaver Vineyards tasting room next door or relax with a glass of wine on the inn’s back porch. The porch offers idyllic views of the vineyards and the manicured lawn leading down to the lake filled with ducks, fish and frogs. A short drive from the inn, the family-owned Amador Flower Farm offers gardens for strolling and a seemingly endless assortment of daylilies.
Located at the base of the Sierra foothills with panoramic views of nearby Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, Sequoia View Bed & Breakfast is also home to the award-winning Cedar View Winery. Both the winery and the three-suite B&B are nestled on 20 acres of an estate vineyard.
