Best Hammocks for Lounging at California Inns
SACRAMENTO, CA [October 27, 2015]—Few things inspire day dreams more than lounging in a hammock. A number of California inns offer the chance to enjoy some serious relaxation while swaying beneath the trees. The California Association of Boutique & Breakfast Inns (CABBI) has compiled a list of some of the best hammocks to curl up in at inns around the state.
Play Robinson Crusoe on the northern Mendocino coast with an ocean view cabin and hammock at Howard Creek Ranch. The historic 60-acre ranch was established in Westport in the early 1870s and later evolved into a commune during the late 1960s. The owners of the ranch converted the buildings into a bed and breakfast inn the 1970s, but the inn retains its bohemian vibe. The isolated Sea View cabin features a handcrafted redwood interior with a king size bed and French doors that open onto a large deck. Outdoor features include an outdoor kitchen, private hot tub, and a green cotton rope hammock for watching the waves and swaying beneath the trees and strands of twinkle lights.
In the High Sierra, there are half a dozen or so classic cotton rope hammocks strung beneath the rustling aspen trees at Sorensen’s Resort. Nestled in a picturesque alpine valley ringed by mountain peaks, the 165-acre, four season resort features charming cottages and log cabins with fireplaces, a wood-fired sauna, and boundless outdoor recreation. The hammocks are a great spot to take a nap after a long hike or to just curl up with a good book in the shade of the trees.
The luxurious Eden Vale Inn in the Sierra Foothills offers many ways for its guests to unwind: outdoor soaking tubs, therapeutic massages, fireplaces in every room, and an outdoor fire pit for roasting s’mores beneath the stars. But the inn’s striped Guatemalan-style hammocks in rich fall hues are particularly inviting after a day of hiking, rafting, or wine tasting. Some of the hammocks are strung beneath the trees, others beneath wooden arbors draped with grapes vines. All offer a comfortable way to laze away the afternoon.
The striped, two-person cotton hammock at the Lavender Inn in Ojai is surrounded by blooming gardens and mature oaks with a view of the mountains. Guests can kick back with a glass and wine and enjoy tapas while listening to the frog “symphony” emanating from the small garden pond. Pillows for the hammock are always provided and blankets are available for chilly evenings. The eight-room inn was built in 1874 as Ojai’s first schoolhouse. In addition to its relaxing hammock and gardens, the inn features an on-site day spa, cooking classes, lavish breakfasts, and warmly welcomes pets.
The hammock at The Gables Wine Country Inn is nestled beneath a majestic black walnut tree next to a brook where, with a glass of wine in hand, guests can bask in the glow of a glorious Sonoma wine country sunset. The inn is a beautifully-restored and elegantly-appointed Victorian bed and breakfast with 12-foot ceilings and private bathrooms with claw-foot tubs. The inn sits on three-and-a-half acres with lavender gardens and vineyard views. A stay at the inn includes a free winery tasting passport for two, valid at over 100 wineries.
