SACRAMENTO, CA [March 19, 2015]—For some weary travelers, slipping into a warm bath upon arrival to the hotel is one of the best ways to unwind.  It’s all the more inviting when the bath resembles a posh retreat from the pages of a magazine instead of the standard tub and shower combo back home.  Members of the California Association of Boutique and Breakfast Inns (CABBI), which are decidedly non-cookie-cutter in their approach to bathroom design, offer some of the most unique and inviting bathtub settings in the state.

In Sonoma wine country, the deep, granite, Japanese-style soaking tubs for two are one of the signature features of Gaige House’s Creekside Zen Suites and Garden Zen Suites.  The exterior walls of the tubs are thick, chiseled granite, but the inside is polished smooth to a glossy black finish and large enough for couples to enjoy together.  The bathtubs overlook private Japanese rock gardens with soothing fountains.  The Gaige House is an elegant blend of vintage and contemporary and features 23 thoughtfully-appointed guest rooms with a modern, Asian flair. The verdant, secluded setting along a creek includes an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, and gardens with delightful surprises.

Tucked away amid acres of gardens in the Sierra Foothills, Eden Vale Inn features deep outdoor soaking tubs for two on private patios or decks that also happen be to fairly high-tech.  Guests can fill their tub using a computer-controlled system that allows them to select the temperature and press a button to fill the tub.  A green light comes on when the tub is ready.  Five of the inn’s seven guest rooms feature the couples’ outdoor soaking tubs.  All of the guest rooms were custom-designed with sophisticated décor and modern amenities.  The inn also features a swimming pond and a private spa offering therapeutic massage.

The historic Tallman Hotel in rural Upper Lake offers several Garden Rooms with teak Ofuro soaking tubs. The deep, rectangular Japanese tubs are enclosed outdoors on private back decks off of the guest room with outdoor showers.  The tubs are kept between 98 and 100 degrees.  The tubs’ teak wood combined with the warm water releases a soothing aroma.  The handsome 1890s country hotel was completely restored and expanded to a 17-room luxury inn and re-opened in 2006.  It is an ideal place to relax, enjoy a good meal at the hotel’s Blue Wing Restaurant, and explore the beautiful emerging wine country around Clear Lake.

The Gingerbread Mansion in Ferndale is a meticulously restored Victorian with lavish guest rooms and baths furnished with period antiques that evoke scenes from a fairytale.  The glamorous Fountain Suite has the most unique bath setting, featuring twin claw foot tubs placed side-by-side in front of a mirrored wall next to a fireplace with antique, hand-painted tiles and a Victorian fainting couch. In another room, the Veneto, a claw foot tub is perched on a pedestal surrounded by hand painted murals reminiscent of Italy.  In other rooms, like the Empire Suite and Rose Suite, guests can recline in claw foot tubs next to glowing fireplaces.

Soak by a soothing fire under the moonlight or in the sunshine in the oversized Jacuzzi tub for two at the Inn at Playa del Rey. The inviting tubs overlook the 600-acre Ballona Wetlands nature preserve and bird sanctuary just blocks from the ocean.  At the foot of each tub is a romantic gas fireplace.  Window coverings are provided for guests who don’t want the egrets peeking in on their bath.  Just five minutes from Los Angeles International Airport, yet a world away from the city, the inn is a peaceful respite with seaside cottage style and beautiful views of sailboats drifting out to sea with the setting sun.

In Santa Barbara wine country, the intimate Santa Ynez Inn offers an atmosphere of understated, unspoiled luxury coupled with warm hospitality and beautifully appointed rooms in a tranquil setting.  Many of the rooms have jetted whirlpool tubs; the suites boast oversize marble baths with steam showers and heated tile floors.  But room 207 has the most inviting setting for a bath.  Framed in the alcove of a large bay window, the deep soaking tub is the focal point of this luxurious bathroom.  The vintage-style, double-ended pedestal tub with centered vintage fixtures is a jetted whirlpool tub in disguise. The bathroom for room 207 also features two vanities and a steam shower.

Carmel Country Inn features a variety of luxury bathtubs in their guest baths, but their most unique is the Champagne Bubble Tub in room six.  While the tub is designed to look like an antique claw foot tub, it’s actually a modern Jacuzzi tub with two speeds of champagne bubbles to gently massage the body as the claw foot design cradles it.  The tub also features of book rack and a hand-held shower for rinsing off. The inn provides tranquil sea spa bubble bath for a relaxing soak.  The pet-friendly inn is located three blocks from downtown Carmel in a quiet residential setting.  All of their guest rooms feature fireplaces and whirlpool tubs.
