SO public meeting begins work to transform into regional grid

The California Independent System Operator Corp. (ISO) will host a public meeting on February 8 to gather input on studies required by California Senate Bill 350, the Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act.

Signed into law last fall, SB 350 mandates the state to achieve a 50-percent renewable portfolio standard by 2030 and provides the ISO a path toward creating a multi-state regional power grid. The law calls on the ISO to perform a series of studies on the impacts of a regional electricity market.

A regionally managed grid is key to reaching the state’s 50 percent threshold and is expected to boost the amount of clean energy in the power mix, and reduce carbon emissions and energy costs across the West.

The February 8 meeting – available to the public in-person, by web and by phone – will review and take input on the studies’ approach, assumptions and methodology. The studies will estimate overall benefit to consumers, impacts to jobs and benefits to the California economy, impacts to the environment, greenhouse gas emissions, impacts to disadvantaged communities and integration of renewable energy resources.

The input will be used to develop a draft proposal that will be available for public review and comment in the coming months. Related materials are now available on the ISO website here. A meeting presentation will be posted on this page on February 3.
