Brit lines up second on the grid

Following a frenetic final qualifying, fraught with stoppages and the threat of rain, Britain’s Callum Ilott secured a front row start for tomorrow’s F3 qualification race in Macau. After heading final practice earlier in the day, Ilott also held pole for most of the session with a lap time of 2.10.470 before fellow Brit and European F3 rival George Russell topped the times with just three minutes to go. Ilott’s final lap on fresher tyres, was set to be an improvement but a red flag curtailed the session, scuppering any chance to regain the slot.

“It’s good we are on the front row but we were on the verge of getting the pole back when the red flag came out,” says Ilott. “That potential confirms we’ve got a good car and we’ve been quick in all sessions. George did a great job in qualifying but this is a track where you can still make progress if you have the speed.  We are strong and we know we can continue to maintain that into the races.”

Tomorrow’s race starts at 0550 UK time. The results of the 10 lap race will determine the grid for Sunday’s main event, the FIA F3 World Cup."
