Glendora, CA, March 21, 2012 — CalPortland Company has accepted the 2012 ENERGY STAR® Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of its continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency. CalPortland’s accomplishments were recognized at the official ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 15, 2012 where Jean Lupinacci, Chief, ENERGY STAR® Commercial and Industrial Branch presented the 2012 ENERGY STAR® Sustained Excellence Award to Allen Hamblen, President/CEO CalPortland Company, and the CalPortland Energy Management Team.

CalPortland, an ENERGY STAR® partner since 1996, was once again honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency. The company continues to be a strong leader in managing energy and in promoting the benefits of energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR® to industrial companies throughout the U.S and abroad.  This is the eighth consecutive year CalPortland has been awarded the national ENERGY STAR® award with the last six awards being for Sustained Excellence, a feat unmatched by any other U.S. construction materials company.

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of ENERGY STAR®.  “As we celebrate 20 years of progress through the ENERGY STAR® program, EPA is very proud to congratulate the 2012 ENERGY STAR® award winners”, said EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. “Thanks to their innovative thinking and commitment to energy efficiency, these leaders are helping Americans find cost effective ways to save energy in everything we do, which is good for our environment, our health and our future.”

Earlier in the day Mr. Hamblen had the opportunity to meet with Administrator Jackson and other award winners at the EPA Business Roundtable where he remarked that, "ENERGY STAR does a great job to encourage business to business collaboration to find the best energy efficiency practices."

CalPortland received the ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence recognition for advancing comprehensive energy management across its energy value chain. CalPortland’s leadership and long term commitment to energy efficiency demonstrates the types of accomplishments that can be achieved in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our global environment. Recent accomplishments include:

  • Reducing energy intensity by nearly 1 percent while cutting total energy use by 3.2 percent in 2011 despite challenging market conditions in the construction industry.
  • Developing an extensive internal communication and information infrastructure to support energy management activities across the company.
