CALPORTLAND RILITTO ARIZONA CEMENT PLANT EARNS EPA’S ENERGY STAR® CERTIFICATION FOR SUPERIOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

JUNE 27, 2012 Glendora, CA - CalPortland’s Rillito Cement Plant, located in Rillito, AZ, has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) ENERGY STAR® certification, which signifies that the industrial facility performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA.

"CalPortland is pleased to accept EPA’s ENERGY STAR® certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts,” said David Bittel, Rillito Plant Manager. "Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs.”

Earning ENERGY STAR® certification highlights the Rillito Cement Plant’s status being included within the top 25 percent of cement plants in the nation with regard to energy performance. CalPortland improved its energy performance by managing energy strategically across the entire organization and by making cost-effective improvements to its plant.

To earn the ENERGY STAR®, CalPortland took the following actions:

  • CalPortland utilizes an extensive Energy Management program to promote energy efficiency best practices at each of its facilities and for all of its employee’s
  • The Rillito Cement Plant installed a kiln expert control system to reduce the kiln process fuel intensity
  • The Rillito Cement Plant completed the installation of a new gas conditioning tower with a baghouse modification that led to a 2.6 Million kWh/year savings
