CalPortland earns its 8th consecutive national ENERGY STAR award for protecting the environment through energy efficiency

Glendora, CA - March 12, 2012 – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded CalPortland Company a 2012 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award in recognition of its continued leadership in protecting our environment through energy efficiency. CalPortland’s accomplishments in receiving this prestigious national award will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on March 15, 2012, which marks the 20th anniversary of ENERGY STAR.

CalPortland, an ENERGY STAR partner since 1996, is being honored for its long-term commitment to energy efficiency. The company continues to be a strong leader in managing energy and in promoting the benefits of energy efficiency and ENERGY STAR to industrial companies throughout the U.S. This is the eighth consecutive time CalPortland has been awarded an ENERGY STAR award at the national level with the last six awards being for Sustained Excellence. This is a feat unmatched by any other U.S. construction materials company. Recent accomplishments include:

  • Reducing energy intensity by nearly 1 percent while cutting total energy use by 3.2 percent in 2011 despite challenging market conditions in the construction industry.
  • Developing an extensive internal communication and information infrastructure to support energy management activities across the company.
  • Revamping the company’s purchasing policy to acquire only energy-efficient products through national accounts and specifications defined by the company.
  • Supporting research into new technologies that reduce energy consumption in plant operations.
  • Focusing on improvements in fuel efficiency for its extensive fleet of vehicles.
  • Creating a Green Team to support the company’s sustainability efforts.

“CalPortland is committed to partnering with ENERGY STAR in our efforts to increase energy efficiency throughout our construction materials business, which helps protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Allen Hamblen, President and CEO.

“As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ENERGY STAR program, EPA is proud to recognize CalPortland Company with the 2012 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “CalPortland and all our ENERGY STAR award winners are helping Americans find cost-effective ways to save energy in everything we do, which is good for our climate, our health, and our future.”

Over the past 20 years, American families and businesses have saved nearly $230 billion on utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to those from more than 350 million vehicles with help from ENERGY STAR.

The 2012 Sustained Excellence Awards are given to a select group of organizations that have exhibited outstanding leadership year after year. These winners have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by setting and achieving aggressive goals, employing innovative approaches, and showing others what can be achieved through energy efficiency. These awards recognize ongoing leadership across the ENERGY STAR program including energy-efficient products, services, new homes and buildings in the commercial, industrial and public sectors. Award winners are selected from about 20,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
