A long-running mystery of the second world war has finally been solved, leading to a treasure trove of explosive new information about the spy networks of the Nazi regime in the UK and Europe.

British Publisher and Historian Dr Robert Temple discovered a rare copy of a German memoir written by Heinrich Orb, a defector who had worked within the Nazi government and fled to Switzerland during the war. Whilst no one has ever known anything about Heinrich Orb, remarkably the copy of the book that Robert Temple uncovered was signed by the author with the dedication “Heinrich Pfeifer called Orb”.

The discovery that Heinrich Orb was actually Heinrich Pfeifer, a high-level Nazi administrator, changes everything and has led Dr Temple to new discoveries about the Nazi’s spy network in the UK and more. These revelations, published next week in the book Drunk on Power: A Senior Defector’s Inside Account of the Nazi Secret Police State include:

1.            The top two Nazi agents in the UK in 1939 were exposed by Pfeifer, who flew to London from Switzerland to reveal their names to Robert Vansittart, who was ‘Q’, the head of the seven British intelligence agencies. Vansittart then expelled them from the country. This gave Britain a major boost to the war effort by weakening the Nazis’ sources of information in the UK. The book reveals names and a photo of one of the spies.

2.            Pfeifer was a counter-intelligence chief in the Nazi regime. Many of the high-ranking Nazis hated each other and the competition between them was fierce. Himmler ordered Pfeifer to bug the house and the office of Goebbels so he could find out which movie starlets Goebbels was sleeping with. He was also ordered to bug the flat of the movie star Brigitte Helm, the star of the film METROPOLIS, whom he already knew personally.

3.            Pfeifer reveals that writer and fashion journalist Helen Grund, aka Helen Hessel, the woman played by Jeanne Moreau in the 1960s film by Francois Truffaut, JULES ET JIM, was the top Nazi agent in France. This has never before been revealed.

Published 28th September 2023 by Eglantyne Book, DRUNK ON POWER is the remarkable translated and annotated edition of that book, originally titled NATIONALSOZIALISMUS: 13 JAHRE MACHTRAUSCH (National Socialism: Thirteen Years of Power-Intoxication).

Drunk on Power, Edited and annotated by Dr Robert Temple, will be available where books are sold in hardback at £25.
