ARTISANAL GIN GOES FORAGING TO HIGHLIGHT NATIONAL AVAILABILITY
Scotland’s Caorunn Gin Uses Wild Edibles in Cocktails Across the Country
Caorunn, a small batch Scottish gin created from Celtic botanicals handpicked from the hills surrounding its distillery, recently unveiled a new campaign to celebrate its availability in cities across the United States. The initiative, Forage to Glass, highlights the use of locally foraged ingredients to express flavor and a sense of locality in the glass.
In its first outing, Chicago-area bar chefs and mixologists gathered in Lincoln Park with local foraging expert Chris Mayor to forage local edibles for gin-based cocktails. The harvested herbs and botanicals, including wild spicebush, bergamot and several varieties of mint, were then incorporated into a range of cocktails that truly reflects the Windy City.
Caorunn’s gin master, Simon Buley—an avid locavore—was on hand to provide technical insight on the gin’s production. The artisanal spirit is produced using natural resources from a boreal forest and distilled with traditional botanicals alongside the wild rowan berry, coul blush apple, dandelion, myrtle and Scottish heather in one of the world’s three Copper Berry Chambers.
“With Caorunn, we forage our botanicals within a stone’s throw of our distillery, which allows us to truly distill our Celtic landscape into a glass,” says Ibolya Bakos-Tonner, global brand manager for Caorunn Gin. “Forage to Glass not only allows us to illustrate the craft behind the liquid, but celebrates the seasonal flavors available in each American city, and how the use of those edibles can create a very specific, local flavor.”
The company began exporting to select U.S. markets three years ago, but its exacting production process mandated a slow expansion. Now available nationally, the small-batch gin is finding local opportunities, such as the foraging initiative, to showcase its terroir-driven profile.
Caorunn will forage with local bartenders in multiple markets, and make those cocktail recipes available to the public online at the company’s website, www.caorunngin.com.
