CO2 Capsol gains traction in carbon capture from Waste-to-Energy – Awarded contract for a feasibility study from KVA Linth
Oslo, Norway - 16 March 2023
CO2 Capsol has been selected by KVA Linth to conduct a feasibility study for the
CapsolEoP™ (end-of-pipe) carbon capture technology at a Waste-to-Energy plant
located in Switzerland. Once modernised in 2025, the plant has a carbon capture
potential of more than 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, of which half of the CO2
comes from biogenic sources.
“We are pleased to be awarded this feasibility study with KVA Linth, which is a
confirmation of our strong traction for carbon capture within the
Waste-to-energy industry. Since a large part of the waste has biogenic origin,
capturing and storing the CO2 is an effective way of removing CO2 from the
atmosphere (negative emissions) with our safe and environmentally friendly
technology for capturing of CO2 from flue gases,” says Jan Kielland, CEO of CO2
Capsol.
Currently, there are over 2,600 Waste-to-Energy plants globally with an
incineration capacity of around 460 million tonnes of waste per year. This
number is expected to increase, to about 3,000 plants with a capacity of about
630 million tonnes by 2031, according to environmental and energy technology
consultancy Ecoprog. One tonne of waste incinerated equals about 1 tonne of CO2
emissions that can be captured.
Traction within the Waste-to-Energy industry
CO2 Capsol is emerging as an attractive technology provider for CO2 capture from
Waste-to-Energy plants.
Recent activities include:
• In September 2022, a CapsolGo® carbon capture demonstration campaign was
initiated at Öresundskraft´s Energy-from-Waste plant Filbornaverket in
Helsingborg, Sweden.
• During Q1 2023, a 12-month CapsolGo® demonstration campaign for a major German
energy company will start operating at an Energy-from-Waste plant and later at a
biomass-fired combined heat and power plant.
• CO2 Capsol signed in December 2022 a Cooperation agreement with Sumitomo SHI
FW for delivery of standardised carbon capture plants for Waste-to-Energy
plants.
• CO2 Capsol is working with Sumitomo SHI FW and Woima to develop a carbon
capture plant at Westenergy’s Waste-to-Energy plant in Vaasa, Finland.
