Car buyers warned to more than just kick the tyres when buying second hand
In a tough economic climate, every penny counts, and many Brits are turning to part-worn tyres as a way to economise on their motoring costs. However, as independent research* has revealed, in a sample of part-worn tyres, 98% were being sold illegally – potentially endangering lives.
“It is a sad fact of life that we are all trying to rein in our spending” comments Louis Rix, director of car finance and dealer specialists carfinance247.co.uk “but motorists who believe that they are getting value for money buying part-worn tyres, may not be.”
The research from tyre safety organisation Tyresafe.org highlighted many issues, including dangerous and unsafe repairs, bead damage, exposed cords and evidence of runflat damage as well as one tyre having a dangerous ‘metal object penetrating 5cm through the tread’.
Mr. Rix said that all the vehicles sold by carfinance247.co.uk come with 12 months’ MOT, and that “all our tyres will have at least 5mm of tread when we sell the vehicle, which is well above the legal requirement”.
