- Castle Stuart team win prestigious Spire Trophy
- Home side secures victory over visiting golfers
- Annual event growing in stature
Leading figures from the worlds of sport, business and the media took to the fairways of Castle Stuart Golf Links with the aim of capturing a prestigious prize.
Two teams of 24 players battled it out for the Spire Trophy which is competed for annually in a two-day event over the course that hosted the Scottish Open for three years from 2011-2013.
This was the fourth contest for the eye-catching trophy, modelled on the spire on the nearby castle which dates from the 17th century, and featured a visiting Sassenachs team against a Castle Stuart side.
The Sassenachs were captained by Simon Creagh Chapman, former long standing green chairman of Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, who instigated the competition, and also included Roger Cleveland, chief designer at golf company Callaway.
Also among the ranks was BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty, who won Celebrity Mastermind last year and has expressed a passion to take up golf professionally.
The Castle Stuart team, captained by Stuart McColm, the golf club’s general manager, included Gillian Stewart, the Inverness-based former professional golfer and now coach; Maureen Madill, a former Curtis Cup player and now golf broadcaster; and Linda Lawson, daughter of the late rugby commentator Bill McLaren, and her husband Alan, a former president of the Scottish Rugby Union.
The teams competed in Saturday fourballs and Sunday foursomes with the Castle Stuart side coming out on top 13 ½ to 10 ½..
Stuart McColm said: “The concept of the ‘Spire’ is to invite like-minded people to get together over a weekend for a friendly but competitive tussle on the links and then enjoy some fine Highland hospitality.
“The event has grown in prestige each year and this weekend’s event was the best yet. We have attracted a high calibre guest list from all different walks of life and they enjoyed some great golf contesting this eye-catching trophy.”
Simon Creagh Chapman founded the event and Castle Stuart Golf Links commissioned master silversmith Andy Macgowan to make the trophy. Simon later, by chance, discovered a wooden beam from Castle Stuart in an Edinburgh warehouse and this was made into a plinth for the trophy.
