Finland’s transmission system operator Fingrid Oyj and Caverion have signed contracts worth approximately EUR 18 million covering the construction of a new 400-kilovolt substation in Åbacka, Ostrobothnia, as well as expansion works at the 400 kV substations in Vuolijoki (Kajaani) and Pyhäselkä (Muhos).

The substations form part of Fingrid’s nationwide investment programme aimed at strengthening Finland’s electricity transmission capacity and ensuring the reliability of the national grid in response to growing electricity demand and the increasing share of renewable energy production.
The new Åbacka substation is a key element of the future transmission connections between Kristiinankaupunki and Nokia, improving the smooth flow of electricity in particular along Finland’s west coast. The expansions at the Vuolijoki and Pyhäselkä substations will enable the connection of new electricity consumers to the grid.
“The Åbacka–Nokia transmission connection project is a very important reinforcement of the national grid, enabling electricity to be transmitted from production surplus areas on the west coast to Pirkanmaa and more broadly to southern Finland. The new connection will also facilitate the integration of additional renewable energy into the grid. We are pleased to have a highly competent contractor to build the strategically important Åbacka substation,” says Daniel Kuosa, Head of Construction at Fingrid.
Caverion has extensive experience in high-voltage projects and has delivered several dozen 400 kV and 110 kV substation and transmission line projects in Finland in recent years. The company also plays a significant role in Finland’s security of supply and has a long-standing partnership with Fingrid.
“We see contracts related to substations and transmission lines as a strong vote of confidence from Fingrid. Through our expertise, we ensure that Finland’s security of supply and electricity infrastructure remain robust and reliable. In recent years, we have built nearly 30 new substations in Finland, modernised around 50 substations and delivered close to 50 transmission line projects of various sizes,” says Kari Aalto, Business Director, Industrial Projects and Infrastructure at Caverion.
Caverion will begin the required design work immediately, with construction scheduled to start in 2027. The new Åbacka substation is expected to be completed in 2028, and the expansions at the Vuolijoki and Pyhäselkä substations will also be completed in 2028.
