Nebius and Caverion have signed an agreement valued at approximately EUR 15 million for the design and construction of a substation for Nebius’s data center in Lappeenranta, Finland. The 310-megawatt facility, expected to be completed in 2027, is set to become one of Europe’s largest data centers dedicated to AI computing.

The substation is a critical part of the data center’s infrastructure, and the project will be delivered on an accelerated schedule while meeting high safety and quality standards
As is typical in data center construction, the substation project will move on an exceptionally fast timeline: design work will begin immediately, construction is scheduled to start in July 2026, and the substation is expected to be completed in spring 2027. In its first phase, the substation will have a capacity of 70-megawatt (MW) and cover approximately 7,000 square meters.
The substation project will create work for about 80 professionals, particularly specialists in the energy sector and electricians.
“Finnish expertise has convinced also international investors and customers of large industrial projects and data infrastructure. We are pleased to now deliver the data center substation for Nebius as well,” says Kari Aalto, Caverion’s Head of Industrial Projects and Infrastructure.
According to Aalto, the project’s fast pace is driven above all by the company’s own professionals, who bring extensive experience from demanding energy and infrastructure projects. A local partner network, combined with Caverion’s proactive supply chain management, also plays a significant role.
Deep expertise in substations and critical infrastructure
Caverion is known in the data and energy infrastructure market as a technical design, project delivery, and lifecycle partner for large, technologically advanced industrial and infrastructure projects delivered to exceptionally high safety and quality standards.
The company has contributed to 10 demanding data center projects, along with dozens of other technologically advanced industrial and infrastructure projects requiring exceptionally high safety and quality standards.
Recent data center references include Nebius’s data center in Mäntsälä, completed in late 2025, and Hyperco Fin HoldCo 1 Oy’s data center in Kouvola, where work began in early 2026.
Caverion also has extensive experience in high-voltage projects. In recent years, the company has built nearly 30 new substations in Finland, modernized about 50 existing substations, and completed nearly 50 transmission line projects of varying sizes in 110 kV and 400 kV networks.
“Our company is known for delivering technically demanding projects on tight schedules without compromising on safety or quality. We once again thank Nebius for its confidence in our capabilities, the quality of our work, and our safe way of operating,” Aalto says.
