New surgery building at the hospital of Heidelberg, Germany is soon ready to operate - supported by state-of-the-art building automation

Caverion is responsible of the technical installation of state-of-the-art building automation solution at the newly built surgery building at the Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany. The customer in the project is the public organisation Landesbetrieb Vermögen und Bau Baden-Württemberg (VB-BW). The work by Caverion has been ongoing since 2016 and is nearing completion.

"The availability of the automation technology is particularly important for us," says Gunnar Kirrmann, project manager at VB-BW. "This is the only way to ensure optimal conditions for patients and hospital staff at all times. A special challenge was also the connection to an external building control system.”

The new clinic building contains five building sections. It is one of the largest public construction projects of the state of Baden-Württemberg in recent years. On a gross floor area of approx. 20,800 square meters there are new rooms available for general surgery, including radiology as well as cardiac, vascular and transplantation surgery. The heart of the facility is the operating area with 16 operating theatres, two of which are hybrid operating theatres. There are 313 beds for patient care, a lecture hall with 196 seats, seven seminar rooms and a laboratory area for research and teaching purposes.

"The modern building automation solution enables communication between all connected building services systems. This automates the control and regulation of energy-efficient and comfortable buildings," says Frank Krause, Head of Caverion’s Germany division. "And is thus the single most critical element in building operation – especially in sensitive hospital areas."

The complex building automation solution was mostly implemented by Caverion experts – including planning, programming and commissioning. In addition to the automation technology, Caverion installed the technical disciplines of cooling and heating and sanitation for the new hospital building.
