Cell Network and Birdstep Technology collaborate on the next generation of mobile Internet solutions Cell Network and Birdstep Technology in Norway have entered collaboration for mobile Internet solutions. The agreement, which was signed today, means that users of mobile communications will get the benefit of both Cell Network's competence within digital media and Birdstep's database technology. "We want to offer both our customers and our collaboration partners a complete solution," says Bente Sollid, MD of Cell Network Norway. "Birdstep's database technology will form the starting point for the development of the next generation of mobile communications solutions." The collaboration will result in solutions that make it possible to process large quantities of data on portable units - a development which will benefit business travellers amongst others. Analysis from the Gartner Group shows that the increased bandwidth, which is expected from GPRS and UMTS technology, will strengthen demand for local computing power. Users need applications that effectively handle e-commerce, transactions and other local data processing. "The need for local data processing will increase radically in the next few years. In the immediate future, portable units such as mobile telephones and PDAs will have to be able to process large quantities of data. Birdstep's database technology increases capacity and thus opens the door for a whole series of new applications and services on the mobile network," says Henning Klemp, MD of Birdstep Technology. Birdstep and Cell Network will actively seek joint projects and produce concepts to ensure that Birdstep's database technology and Cell Network's competence within digital media will be a winning combination.
