CellPoint Announces New Mobile Application Services Platform - Mobile Location Broker; Opens up the Mass Market for Location Services Security and Privacy Concerns Addressed for Operators and Developers London, September 17th, 2001 -- CellPoint Inc. (Nasdaq: CLPT), a global provider of mobile location technology and services, announces Mobile Location Broker version 1.0 (MLB), a new software platform that enables operators, service providers and portals secure linking of location applications with location determination platforms. MLB is a new discrete layer in CellPoint's location solution that facilitates secure and efficient delivery of location information. Mobile operators and portals need not worry about security or privacy as MLB completely manages these elements. "MLB allows faster development and delivery of new location services because it centralizes the control functions, protecting the mobile network or portal and alleviates the need for developers to build in security interfaces," said Lars Persson, CEO of CellPoint Europe. "Now that we have network-wide location services available with CellPoint's MLS, mobile subscribers will access a wide variety of services - both directly from the mobile operator and through mobile portals." The experience of Japan's i-Mode from NTT DoCoMo illustrates the importance of a product such as MLB. More than 40,000 different i-Mode sites have been developed by third-parties and mobile operators. In order for the 'GSM world' to replicate the runaway success of i-Mode on WAP or WEB servers, security 'layers' are therefore needed that protect the operator's network while at the same time permitting access for applications to the positioning data. At the same time, the privacy of the subscriber being positioned needs to be guaranteed. The best way to do this is to provide support for anonymous location, which allows positioning while safeguarding subscriber privacy. In the mobile location business, MLB provides this layer of security and privacy, thus enabling the development and proliferation of a multitude of location- based services while maintaining the integrity of the core systems running in the network. In essence, MLB now makes the market for location-based services wide open, as operators need no longer worry about the security implications of interfacing with external applications - MLB takes care of this in an efficient, scalable and stable manner while offering telecom-grade reliability. MLB supports a wide range of functionality, including: · Subscriber Privacy Management · Subscriber and client handling · Comprehensive anonymity handling · Charging · Logging and Statistics MLB will allow subscribers to decide that they can be located 'on-the- fly', whether they are in their home country, roaming internationally or accessing a portal that provisions services in multiple countries. Today MLB opens up the market for the deployment of innovative applications by hundreds of third parties - CellPoint's Location Developers' Zone (LDZ) for instance already has 427 developers online since its launch earlier this summer. MLB also contains many common functions for application developers, making it much easier and quicker to develop mobile applications. MLB includes rich functionality to support quick and easy implementation of applications, developed both in-house and by third-parties. MLB is network and technology independent, and works across the complete spectrum of network infrastructures (GSM, GPRS, EDGE and UMTS) from different network hardware manufacturers. MLB supports a wide range of location determination platforms including CellPoint's Mobile Location System (MLS). It communicates through open APIs based on standardized Mobile Location Protocol (MLP). MLB is designed to run within an operator or service provider's trusted network domain. Applications running on the platform could be either 'internal' (running in the trusted domain) or 'external' (running outside the trusted domain). The MLS/MLB solution also provides seamless migration to the third generation (3G/UMTS) networks that will roll out over the coming years. While not all users will own A-GPS-equipped phones in the future, all network subscribers will still be able to use location services from operators and portals based on the functionality CellPoint has developed today. "Currently the name of the game in the mobile telecoms world is new service revenues," concluded Persson. "With 3G looking to be well into the future, operators tell us they want and need new services today that can be deployed quickly to contribute to their revenues now. MLS and MLB are built to do just that, now and into the future." CellPoint Inc.
