Four in ten of us miss breakfast in the working week because we oversleep, according to new research*! It’s maybe not surprising, when three in ten people claim they hate getting up and 54% of us set our alarms to snooze. While men often get accused of being lazy and sluggish, the findings show that women are in fact the worse offenders.

The findings, issued for Farmhouse Breakfast Week (Jan 23-29 2011), show that a third of women find it extremely difficult to get up in the morning, and only 13% find it easy. Meanwhile one in three men say they get up immediately after the alarm goes off and only a quarter say they hate getting up. Women are also more than twice as likely as men to lie in bed for more than half an hour, constantly pushing snooze until they eventually get out of bed. Despite being short of time in the morning, one in ten of us still find the time to check emails and status updates, surf the web or put the TV on, as soon as we get up. Karen Levy, from campaign organisers HGCA said: “I know that getting up can be hard, but people are choosing to spend more time under the duvet or on the internet rather than eating breakfast. It really need only take a few minutes - a bowl of wholegrain cereal with milk or two slices of wholemeal toast, both drunk with a glass of fruit juice, takes minutes and can really help set you up for the day”. Research shows that eating breakfast regularly improves your mood , your memory and concentration levels and provides you with more energy throughout the day . Needless to say, skipping breakfast does the opposite, leading to fatigue and increased snacking. Karen Levy added: “Starting the day the right way is vital and whether you are a snoozer or not, breakfast should be something the nation should make time for. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to shake up their morning routines for this year’s Farmhouse Breakfast Week.” So how do you Shake Up Your Wake Up to make time for breakfast? How about downloading your favourite breakfast alarms to your mobile phone to get you in the mood. Farmhouse Breakfast Week has also teamed up with life coach Rebekah Fensome to provide tips on shaking up your morning routine. Rebekah says: • Eating a balanced breakfast every day is not only a healthy choice but it will also give your mind and body the boost it needs to take on the day • Take a shower in some aromatic shower wash and splash on your favourite perfume or aftershave. This tells yourself that you’re preparing yourself in a loving way for your day ahead • Put an upbeat song on full blast and have a dance to shake all your energy about and raise your spirits • Travel a different way to work every morning or take the scenic route. The change of scenery will keep you on the ball as well as shaking up your routine • Start the day by looking in the mirror and telling yourself you look great!
