Just 1% of retailers use zero hours contracts states Ceridian – based on over a third of a million employees

According to Ceridian, one of the UK’s leading HCM technology and service providers that looks after the payroll for over 20 per cent of the UK high street, just 1.2 per cent of their employees are employed on zero hours contracts.

David Woodward, chief product & innovation officer at Ceridian UK, said: “Zero hour contracts are currently a hot topic so we thought we should add some perspective to the debate, especially given the work the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, Vince Cable, has committed to review this practice.

“As a company with a long and successful history of working with some of the largest retailers in the UK, we can confirm that based on over a third of a million employees working in the retail sector only 1.2 per cent are employed on zero hours contracts. Based on these real payroll data points, it would seem that the retail sector is not a major contributor to the overall number as reported by the recent CIPD research.”

The Office of National Statistics recently revised its estimates of Britain's employees on zero hours contracts upwards by 25 per cent to 250,000. However, The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) fuelled the debate by suggesting that there could be about one million employees on zero hours contracts in the UK based on a nationally representative survey of over 1,000 employers.
