Companies Urged to Update Electrical Fans Ahead of EU Regulation

Leading UK electrical components company Challenger Components urges companies to update their fans and thermal management solutions before strict new EU rules come into force.

Tuesday 12th July, 2011: The EU has introduced, and continues to make, major changes to the energy efficiency requirements of electrical fans. In fact, new regulations on energy efficiency being introduced by the EU in the next four years could mean that up to 50 percent of existing electrical fans will need to be upgraded.

Since June, 2010, energy efficiency limits have been put in place for both individual units or for fans in use within a particular device.

The Energy-related Products Directive (ErP) comes into force in two stages – in 2013 and 2015 - with stringent requirements for fans and their efficiency in the power range of 125 watts to 500 kilowatts.

Josie Colgate from Challenger Components comments;

Launched as part of the European Union’s plans to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 20 percent by 2020, the Energy-related Products Directive (ErP) will have a significant impact on businesses that rely on many types of fans, especially industries such as refrigeration, IT manufacturing and air conditioning units.

“There will be minimum efficiency requirements, which could see as many as 30 percent of all currently available fans failing to satisfy the new regulations. By 2015, when the second round of energy efficiency measures come into force, as many as 50 percent of the fans in operation today could no longer meet efficiency standards.

“We urge companies and manufacturers who have not already taken on board these changes to do so immediately as failure to comply could have a significant impact on business.

“At Challenger Components we are specialists in the supply of energy efficient fans and blowers. We are an official supplier of Ebm-Papst fans, which are proven to be among the most energy efficient of all new model fans.”

To help companies understand in more detail the new EU legislation Challenger Components has put together a white paper on the topic, offering an introduction to the changes. This can be downloaded at: http://www.challengercomponents.com/news/energy-efficient-fans.php
