Spintronic device 1

Photographer: Chalmers

The experiment setup, built by André Dankert and Saroj Dash, consists of a graphene conductor mounted on a silicon substrate. The spin polarised electron current is fed in at source contact S and led away at drain contact D. Along its path, the spin current passes through the heterostructure (marked in green in the figure), which is made up of a few layers of molybdenum disulphide on top of the graphene layer. By applying a gate voltage across the heterostructure, it is possible to control whether the current that passes will include any spin signal or not.
