The National Skills Academy for Manufacturing (the Skills Academy) has joined forces with the City of Bristol College to support businesses and jobs in the South West through effective skills training. Brunel and Gordano Training (BGT), part of the college, has signed a formal agreement to become an approved provider of training courses designed by the Skills Academy – which is part of Semta, the Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies. The partnership aims to deliver a maximum return on investment for businesses and help them to meet future challenges. Recent research by Semta has found that 1,250 engineering and manufacturing firms in the South West risk failing because they are unaware of skills gaps in the workplace. As a result more than 5,200 people in the region could lose their jobs unless employers invest in skills they need to remain competitive. Explained Bill Twigg, Development Director at Semta: “We already enjoy an excellent relationship with BGT and by working closer with them we hope to make a real difference to manufacturing firms in the South West. “By turning to accredited training providers through the Skills Academy, employers can access world-class training courses and nationally recognised qualifications with a proven track record of delivering a six-to-one return on investment.” Commented Mike Holliday, Managing Director of BGT: “As well as delivering the Skills Academy’s Business-Improvement Techniques (B-IT) programmes, we can provide a full range of apprenticeships and technical courses which play a major part in reducing skills gaps. “We also enjoy excellent working relations with employers and can provide in-house delivery, short courses, college courses or a combination of all three,” he added.
